PPT on networking

computer network

Ø  A Computer network is define as the interconnection of two or more computers. It is done to enable the computers to communicate and share available resources
.

Ø APPLICATION
§ Sharing of resources such as printer.
§ Sharing of expensive database and software.
§ Communication  from one computer to another computer.
§ Exchange of data and information among users via network.
§ Sharing of information over geographically wide areas.

Component of computer network

ØTwo or more computer
Ø  Cables as link between the computers
Ø  A NIC on each computer
Ø  Switches
Ø  Software called OS (operation system)
NETWORK BENIFITS

ØThe network provided to the user can be divided into two categories
§ Sharing
§ Connectivity

OTHER BENEFITS OF COMPUTER NETWORK

ØIncreased speed
ØReduced cost
ØImprove security
ØCentralized software
ØElectronic mail
ØFlexible access

Disadvantages of

network

ØHigh cost of installation
Ø Failure of server
Ø Cable faults

LOCAL AREA NETWORK

 (LAN)

ØLAN is a network which is designed to
operate over a small physical area such as
an office , factory or a  group of buildings.
ØLAN’S are easy to design and troubleshoot.
Ø Exchange of information and sharing of
resources become easy because of LAN.
Ø It is usually a privately owned networks.

WIDE AREA NETWORK
              (WAN)
ØIt is cheaper and more efficient.

ØMost WAN networks are used to transfer
large   blocks of data between its user.
ØThe communication between different
user of WAN is established using leased telephone lines, satellite links and similar
 channel.

PERSONAL AREA NETWORK (PAN)

ØA Personal area network is a computer network organized around an individual
 personal.
ØIt generally consists of a mobile
computer, a cell phone or personal digital
assistant. PAN enables the communicationn among these device.
ØThe PANs can be constructed using wireless or cables.
METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK (MAN)

ØIt is in between LAN & WAN technology that covers the entire city.
Ø It uses similar technology as LAN.
Ø It can be a single network such as cable TV
network, or a measure of connecting a
number of LAN’s a large network so that
resources can be shared LAN to LAN as well
 as device to device.

CAMPUS AREA NETWORK(CAN)
ØThe campus area network is made up of
an interconnection   of LAN with limited geographical area.
Ø Network equipments such as switches, routers and the transmission media i.e.
optical fiber etc are almost entirely owned
 by the campus owner.
